Genealogical research about our Salemme family.

I have now been researching my family tree for over 30 years; and before me my grandfather had been doing the same.

We succeded in outlining the genealogical tree of the Salemme family from the end of the 14th century up to nowadays. Obviously, I have not been able to define all the collateral branches.

My most recent "success story" is about Giacomo Salemme.

Till the end of 1800 my family lived in Gaeta, near Roma Italy. In the second half of 1800 a Giacomo Salemme (born in 1846) went to America. Un until recently I assumed this meant the United States, and the probable place sounded like "Tampick". It was only after I managed to track down a great-grandson of his, in London, that I discovered the whole story.

Salemme Giacomo, son of Antonio, born at Borgo di Gaeta on 31 September 1846, was married to Filomena (not Filippa as we first thought) Colozzi and went to America. To the continent we call America, not to the United States of America.

They settled in Tampico (not Tampick), a very important port during the XIX century and early XX in the Republic of México. One of their daughters, Dolores Salemme, born in Tampico married to Santiago Oñate, originally from Michoacán, México, and had several sons and one daughter. One of his sons, Santiago Oñate Salemme, was born in Tampico in 1918. He married with Clara Laborde, in México City, and died there in 1968. Amongst the documents where the information was extracted, was an old stained document, a "Patente di Capitano di Gran Cabottagio" issued to him by the Marina Mercantile Italiana (Italian Navy), issued at Roma on 24 November 1871.

Apart from the documented information, this descendent was also able to tell me an unconfirmed story that ran in the family. According to this story the Salemme were sailors in Gaeta. Apparently they navigated ships build or administer by a person of the name "Matarazzo", also from Gaeta (I know that among those ships were the Maria Teresa, the Tigre, the Aurora, the Teresina, the Santa Filomena and the St. Pasquale; I understand that in the Museo Navale di Genoa there are some pictures of those ships).

At a certain time near to the end of the XIX century, the story goes, a big storm sank several ships commanded by members of the Salemme and Colozzi families, and the wifes of those who survived, made them promise that they would abandon the sea. In accordance to other version, they were financially broke and had to leave Italy. Giacomo went to Tampico, where he lived until his death without seen again the shores of Italy. He did not abandon completly the sea, because he became capitan of the port of Tampico and was in charge of introducing big ships into port.

This is what I have learnt so far, and I am still waiting for a cousin's call...

If you know anyone interested in genealogical research about Salemme, will you please, give me their address or give them mine
